Fighting in the Anglo-Sikh Wars

Nigel Amies will talk about the involvement of the 9th East Norfolk Regiment in the fierce fighting of the Anglo-Sikh War of 1845, and relate how the future of the British Empire in India depended on the outcome of that war. He will link this with the Second A-S War, 1848-49, and the subsequent removal of the Maharajah Duleep Singh from his kingdom in the Punjab to England. Dynamic Figure Drawing

To accompany the Circus Show of Shows exhibition, we will have an acrobatic and dance performer as our model. Explore structure, form, posture, proportion and movement of the figure through drawing. Pablo Fanque's Fair and The Victorian Circus

Pablo Fanque, the first recognised Black circus proprietor in Britain, was born in Norwich. This talk uses his career to explore the growth of circus as an entertainment form and its contribution to popular culture. It covers the origins of circus; the circus apprentice system; moral attitudes towards women and children performance in the circus; the role of prejudice, race and entrepreneurism within Victorian society. Great Yarmouth’s 17th Century Tokens and their Issuers

From the death of Charles I in 1649, England and Wales found themselves in the grip of a currency crisis. To remedy this shortage of money, the traders and civic bodies of the country had their own token coinage made. This talk looks at Great Yarmouth’s 17th century tokens and at the stories of the people who issued them.
