Searching For Birds in Honour of John Henry Gurney

A talk by NMS Research Associate Clive Slater Join Clive as he describes his search to see the seven magnificent bird species named in Gurneys honour by fellow 19th century ornithologists. This search will take you to southern Africa to find Gurney's Sugarbird, Orange Ground Thrush and Black-Necked Grebe. Then to the Philippines to see the Giant Scops Owl, the Molucca Islands for Gurney's Eagle and the Solomon Islands for the Pacific Baza and lastly the story of the near extinct Gurney's Pitta.

The sessions will build confidence and skills in a friendly and supportive environment by offering constructive feedback, suggestions and advice. Lady Lord Mayors of Norwich

Following the release of her new book Phyllida gives us an insight into the diverse lives, both personal and civic, of seventeen remarkable women, who between 1923 and 2017, has each held the honour of being First Citizen of the City of Norwich in Norfolk England. Moreover, the pioneer Ethel Colman, daughter of the mustard giant, simultaneously became the first female Lord Mayor of both Norwich and of Great Britain.  A talk by Phyllida Scrivens.

Textile Takeover: Dress to Protest!

Explore costume, accessories and textiles created or worn with protest in mind. A talk at 2pm by Joy Evitt will reveal how fashions changed as women sought to play a role during WW1. Demonstrations by Norwich Lacemakers will reveal how delicate lace was used as a mark of status and social standing and you can join Norwich Embroiderer's Guild on Saturday to try your hand at stitching a ‘Suffragette style’ brooch. Join the C&TA to sew a commemorative and celebratory suffragette prisoner’s quilt and follow the example of recovering WW1 soldiers to create a your own Sweetheart Pin Cushion. There will also be a chance to get close to and find out more about the Lorina Bulwer tapestry. The Duvet of Love is made with hundreds of badges and you can create your own protest pin badge.

Welcome to the Workhouse: A special event for players of the National Lottery and Norfolk Museums Pass holders

Join us for a special event to mark the culmination of the Voices from the Workhouse project at Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse. This three-year project generously funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and a range of local supporters, has completely transformed the museum displays, helping us to tell the real stories of the people who lived and worked in the workhouse. Explore the new galleries, discover the research behind these displays and find out how to explore your own family history. Meet costumed characters and get creative with a range of activities inspired by the stitched letters of workhouse inmate Lorina Bulwer. Stroll around the new-look Collections Gallery with over 2,000 objects telling the story of life, work and play across the county and pause at the bar to recall Norfolk’s rural pubs with our 2018 special exhibition, Beer and Brewing.
